Marshneil Lal, LCSW, culturally affirming therapist in PhoenixThe best therapy happens inside a strong relationship — and, as our next featured clinician puts it, it really comes to life out in the community too. Meet Marshneil Lal, LCSW, of Manava Counseling, a Phoenix therapist who offers culturally affirming, inclusive care and a refreshing dose of directness.

Who Marshneil works with

Marshneil loves range. “I have experience working in crisis, outpatient, inpatient, and mandated settings,” she says — a breadth that means very little fazes her. What she enjoys most is helping people tune in to themselves: “I really enjoy supporting people trying to explore and establish their own inner compass.” If you’re trying to figure out what youactually want, rather than what you’re supposed to want, that’s her wheelhouse.

Why culturally affirming, inclusive care

For Marshneil, this isn’t a checkbox — it’s lived. She offers culturally affirming, inclusive care, she says, “as I am someone who has benefited (and continues to!) from receiving care that is culturally affirming and inclusive.” She’s keenly aware that people need different and varied levels of support, and she finds real meaning in making sure a client feels genuinely understood. “I love being able to help someone feel seen and heard, especially with vulnerable and personal topics.”

What a first session feels like

Marshneil is honest about the obvious: depending on what you’ve experienced or expected, it can feel nerve-racking to sit across from a stranger and talk through the personal details of your life. But she’s heard consistently what clients take away from a first session — that they felt safe and supported, that their goals were heard, that the modalities and any diagnosis were thoroughly explained, and that they appreciated her directness. You’ll know where you stand with Marshneil, and that clarity is part of the comfort.

Phoenix, community, and where the work comes to life

Marshneil practices what she encourages. She sings in a community chorus, and she nudges her clients to plug into their own communities too. “There are so many experiences to have in the valley,” she says. Her view is that therapy is a starting point, not the whole story: “Great things happen in the therapy space, but the work really comes to life when we engage with our loved ones and neighbors.” It’s a philosophy that fits right in at the Hub.
